The Secret of Sweet Treats Kingdom - Book Review
The Secret of Sweet Treats Kingdom By Kim Davis
Love conquers even the most dreadful situation. It melts down a hardened or frozen heart. That’s exactly what Amber and Ava have proven in The Secret of Sweet Treats Kingdom.
Amber and Ava are sisters - or half siblings if you like to call it. In their usual days, the two kids don’t get along much for some reason. One day, Amber is tasked to babysit Ava while their parents are away. And, this means missing her best friend’s 12th birthday party.
At home, the two kids play a board game where Ava always wins. Amber accuses her younger sister of cheating and it angers her. She’s so pissed off that she calls off another round of the game. She slams the game pieces against the wall.
Suddenly, a strong earthquake rocks their home and the two kids are sucked into a vacuum until they reach an enchanted place where sweet candies abound. In the unfamiliar realm, Amber and Ava meet fantastic creatures, such as the mint-green rabbit who meets them upon arrival. From here on, the siblings get to experience twists and turns in their lives.
The Book and the Author
The plot of The Secret of Sweet Treats Kingdom is very well crafted. It's a combination of fun, suspense, and adventure. Although the book does not have many pictures (I mean, the PDF copy that I got has no illustrations on the pages), I guess the author leaves it that way to train young readers to use their imagination. Instead, Kim Davis provides vivid descriptions of the scenery in the kingdom to keep the young readers captivated. The abundant treats might even make them wish they were also there. The chapters are short and just within the attention span of a five-year-old listener.
Moreover, the author injects love as an important lesson to learn from The Secret of Sweet Treats Kingdom. Despite the many challenges she encounters along the way, Amber’s determination to find Ava shows how much she loves her sister. She selflessly offers herself as a sacrifice to save Ava. Likewise, Ava could not allow Amber to be hurt. Despite her young age, she puts herself in the face of danger to spare Amber from the queen’s wrath. And, because of that gesture of love, the queen softens her heart.
Plus, the Cookie Bar recipe at the end is another treat that young readers might want to try at home.
Overall, I give The Secret of Sweet Treats Kingdom a rating of 5 out of 5 stars and I highly recommend it to readers 8 - 12 years old. Younger kids who can’t read yet would surely love listening to Amber and Ava’s journey.
