Geronimo: A Life From Beginning to End - Book Review

Geronimo: A Life From Beginning to End
by Hourly History

No person is inherently bad; however, serious circumstances can lead to a change in a person’s perspective on life. In the case of Geronimo, the death of his family fueled a deep hatred for both Mexicans and U.S. troops.

Geronimo experienced a normal and carefree childhood, raised in the traditional Native American culture. He once described his upbringing as such:
"I was born on the prairies where the wind blew free and there was nothing to break the light of the sun. I was born where there were no enclosures."
As he entered adolescence, his father taught him essential survival skills that prepared him for the harsh realities of daily life. He learned how to endure long stretches without food and water. Tragically, during the early stages of his training, Geronimo's father passed away. Consequently, his official training was transferred to another relative. The ultimate test of this initial training involved participating in an active raid, and Geronimo successfully completed this at the age of 17. The Tragedy Shortly after finishing his training, Geronimo married and had three children. They lived a happy life together until disaster struck. On one occasion, while Geronimo and fellow tribesmen were trading with the Mexicans, a group of Mexicans attacked their village, massacring many people. Among the deceased were Geronimo’s mother, wife, and all three of their children. This event filled Geronimo with rage, and he became determined to avenge his family. Since he was the one who suffered the most in the massacre, the Apache chief permitted him to lead the raids against the Mexicans. Geronimo grew increasingly ruthless and fearless as time passed. He united various Apache tribes and formed a band of warriors. Together, they raided Mexican villages relentlessly. Despite facing several counterattacks from the Mexican army and heavy casualties among their ranks, Geronimo and his warriors remained undeterred. The Book and the Author Geronimo: A Life from Beginning to End, produced by Hourly History, offers readers a brief overview of the legendary Geronimo. I appreciate the author for creating this informative read, which provides insight into the struggles faced by Native Americans in defending their homeland. The book is concise, but I wished to learn more about the protagonist. I was particularly intrigued by the name Geronimo, as it seems unusual in Native American tradition. Fortunately, I came across a biography that revealed many details about this relentless warrior. I discovered that Geronimo's Indian name was Go Khia yeh. It was, in fact, the Mexicans who named him Geronimo. Overall, I would rate Geronimo: A Life from Beginning to End a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages, especially those interested in history.
